Andreas Makariou (1955 - ) one of the most important Cypriot painters
He was born in Paphos. He established the contemporary Cypriot art movement and continues to influence the Cypriot art. His works were exhibited in the Art Expo New York, Art Expo LA, Europ'Art Geneva, Euro-Art Barcelona, Cairo’s international biennale in Alexandria, Barcelona, Varsovia, Sofia, Florence. He garnered distinctions and international awards. He studied with a state scholarship at the Sourikof Fine Art Academy in Moscow in 1975-1979 in the Painting Department Artamonof and Monumental Painting 1979-1982 in the Department of Monumental Art K.Toutevol. He has been the director of cultural services of Paphos municipality for the years 1987-1993 and has been director of the Pegasus Art Foundation in Limassol since 2007. In 2009 he received the Silver Medal of Honor from the Historical Memory 55-59 committee for work ‘Hymn to Freedom’. His work can be found in museums, national collections and in numerous foundations in Cyprus, Greece, the rest of Europe and the U.S.
